Why Does My Timesheet Say 1.75 Hours? Decimal Time Explained

Log an hour and three quarters against a project and your timesheet says 1.75. Read that cold and it looks like a bug. There aren't 75 minutes in an hour, so why is the software pretending there are? It isn't. It's counting in decimal hours, and once you know that, 1.75 stops being a mistake and starts being one hour and 45 minutes.

What 1.75 hours actually means

Decimal time treats an hour as 1.00 and splits it into hundredths instead of sixtieths. The digits after the point are a fraction of an hour, not a count of minutes. So 0.75 is three quarters of an hour, which is 45 minutes, and 1.75 is an hour plus that.

Converting is one division: minutes ÷ 60. Twenty minutes is 20 ÷ 60, or 0.33. Going the other way, multiply the fraction by 60: the .4 in 2.4 hours is 0.4 × 60, so 24 minutes. The common ones are worth just knowing by heart:

  • 15 minutes = 0.25
  • 20 minutes = 0.33
  • 30 minutes = 0.50
  • 45 minutes = 0.75
  • 50 minutes = 0.83

Why timesheets count this way

Billing arithmetic. Try multiplying 1:45 by a £120 hourly rate and you have to convert it before you can start. Multiply 1.75 by 120 and you're done: £210, one step, and a client's bookkeeper can check it on a calculator. Invoices, payroll systems and spreadsheets all want a single number they can multiply, so timesheets settled on decimal hours long before software got involved. Accountancy firms were filling in paper timesheets in six-minute units (0.1 of an hour) decades ago for exactly this reason.

Decimal is genuinely better for the maths and genuinely worse for reading. Both things are true, which is why the format confuses people who are perfectly good at both clocks and numbers.

The mistakes it causes

The classic one runs in the other direction: typing 1.30 to mean an hour and a half. In decimal, 1.30 is one hour and 18 minutes, so the entry lands twelve minutes light and nobody spots it until the totals look odd. Its mirror image is reading 1.45 as quarter to two when it's actually one hour and 27 minutes. Neither is carelessness. The format is ambiguous to anyone who hasn't been told which convention is in play, and most people never are.

How to switch VibaCloud to hours and minutes

If you'd rather see 1:45 than 1.75, change the display setting:

  1. Open Settings and find Show time as, just under the currency picker.
  2. Choose Hours and minutes (1:45) and save.
  3. Open your Draft Timesheet. Cells, daily totals and the weekly summary now all read h:mm.

Whatever the setting, the grid accepts either style when you type. Enter 1:45 or 1.75 into a cell and it saves the same 105 minutes, then displays it your way. Type 1:75 and it politely refuses, because that's the exact confusion this setting exists to end.

One deliberate exception: invoices stay in decimal. An invoice line is hours × rate, and 1.75 × £120 is the sum your client expects to be able to verify. Your timesheet can speak clock time while your invoices speak arithmetic; nothing is lost in between, because VibaCloud stores minutes underneath and only formats them at the edges.

And if your timesheet is built from your calendar in the first place, most of this stops mattering.
